Gainesville's airport is undergoing some change with upgrades and renovations on the way.
The Gainesville Regional Airport recently broke ground on what will be the new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) building. The brand-new facility will total 8,700 square feet, which is significantly larger than the old building totaling only 5,600 square feet and that was built in 1979.
The building will be located next to the air traffic control tower and will offer better views to the main commercial runway and therefore a better response time. It will also provide better access to the commercial terminal, as well as "good access to an existing service road and utilities."
The old ARFF building does not have enough space or enough facilities to accommodate all of the services that are currently required of such a building. Renovating the old building was cost prohibitive as compared with constructing a new and better one, and so now a brand new one is one the way.
While the project will cost approximately $3.8 million, the new construction, utility upgrades and better access roads will ultimately make the Gainesville Regional Airport an even better transportation hub, and ultimately bettering the city of Gainesville as a whole.
